Introduction to Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to differentiate into various specific cell types. Stem cell therapy utilizes stem cells to replace or repair cells in the body that have been damaged by radiation or chemotherapy, restoring their normal function. This therapy enhances the targeting of tumors and therefore increases the effectiveness of the therapy, thereby reducing off-target events. The main types of stem cells used in cancer therapy include pluripotent stem cells (PSC), adult stem cells (ASC), and cancer stem cells (CSC). Currently, cancer stem cell therapies are still in the early stages of research and are not yet standardized.

Mechanisms of Stem Cell Therapy for Cancer

Studies have shown that some of the potential mechanisms by which stem cell therapies exert anti-cancer effects include the following.

  • Immunomodulation. By regulating the immune system, stem cells stimulate the activity of immune cells, such as T-cells and natural killer cells, to help enhance the body's ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
  • Tissue regeneration and repair. Stem cells are directed to differentiate into mature, functional cells to replace damaged cells, helping to regenerate healthy tissue and restore normal function to affected organs, thereby mitigating the systemic side effects of cancer therapy.
  • Formation of "suicide genes". By modulating the tumor microenvironment or altering molecular pathways associated with cancer cell survival, cancer cells can be made more sensitive to certain anticancer drugs, thereby increasing the effectiveness of killing cancer cells.
  • Supports hematopoietic recovery. Stem cell therapy allows for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which replenishes the bone marrow with healthy cells, thereby stimulating the production of new, healthy blood cells.
  • Targeted delivery of therapeutic agents. Stem cells can be engineered to express therapeutic agents such as anti-cancer drugs, cytokines, or other molecules that specifically target cancer cells.

Our Services

Alfa Cytology offers a comprehensive suite of services for all types of stem cell therapy research, including initial feasibility studies, rigorous preclinical safety and efficacy evaluations utilizing state-of-the-art modeling systems, and support for the design and execution of pivotal experiments.

Autologous Stem Cell Transplant

Autologous stem cell transplantation is a type of cancer therapy in which stem cells are extracted from the cancer patient's own body, cultured under specific conditions and infused back into the body. This therapy reduces the risk of immune rejection and potential disease transmission. Alfa Cytology provides a full range of services for the research of autologous stem cell transplantation therapies, from stem cell collection and expansion to therapeutic formulation and testing.

Autologous Stem Cell Transplant
Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation uses stem cells from a donor, and this type of transplantation utilizing genetically matched healthy stem cells has shown great promise in the therapy of many types of cancer. Our services focus on comprehensive research throughout the transplant process, from rigorous stem cell preparation, donor matching, and host conditioning to graft-versus-host disease modeling.

Syngeneic Stem Cell Transplant

Syngeneic stem cell transplant utilizes stem cells from identical twins, which are essentially an exact match to the stem cell source, thereby reducing the risk of complications such as graft-versus-host disease. Our team of experts is equipped to handle the complexities involved in allogeneic stem cell transplantation, providing high quality services from cell preparation to transplant process design.

Syngeneic Stem Cell Transplant
Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant

Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant

Haploidentical stem cell transplantation is a type of allogeneic transplantation that uses stem cells from a semi-matched donor to replace unhealthy cells, thereby increasing the likelihood of finding a suitable donor. We offer a wide range of preclinical research services for haploidentical stem cell transplants, including precise donor selection, stem cell processing, pre-transplant conditioning and post-transplant care modeling.

Alfa Cytology focuses on the specialized field of cancer stem cell therapies, offering tailored solutions from conducting pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies to evaluating tumor growth inhibition and immunomodulatory effects.
